Welcome to the homeBBBrew board!
Like the BBB, the homeBBBrew board is not a club, just a place to talk about making beer. Is there a swap you would like to see happen? If we can find a few others who have something similar then lets do it!

Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Hey guys, I'd love to try some of your homebrewed sour/funky beers, so let's figure out a way to trade or send some around!

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
I'm blending/bottle a big batch of my sour/wild in a few weeks, so we should maybe plan for it then? Anyone else interested?

also in. I just bottled an 8 month old saison hopped with bramling cross, fermented with Brett B and bottled primed with pear juice; ala logsdon.

Whoever is interested, shoot me an email (Hookstrat at aol.com) and I'll set something up. Let me know in the email how many bottles you would like to trade.

OK, well at risk of looking sad and lonely. Did anyone try to email me? Maybe it ended up in my spam folder? ha!

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Planning to start small, but each participant would need to be willing to send at least 3 bottles (36 oz).

For the first round, I think it's best to keep it simple and just setup trading partners. Then after the first round we can weed out any bad traders and if there are enough participants setup a round-robin trade. Send me an email (Hookstrat at aol.com) if interested.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Two things, one I have a sour as well. A pretty old kegged cassis.

Also, it has been a while but we've done trades here before. We had a great process worth throwing out there. I used to have a free chat room tied into the site, it got little use so I let it lapse. I could hook up another.

The way we ran it is everybody who is interested would send a bottle to everyone else, so we would all have 1 bottle of each others stuff. Then we would pick a date and time and have a live cyber-tasting. We'd all open the same persons beer and drink it together, the brewer would describe things and we would all comment. Then on to the next beer. There were a couple occasions that so many took part that it stopped making sense for everyone to send to everyone, we had a provision in place for that as well. Anyway, the online tastings were always great.

Also, when you do this in a chatroom you can record a transcript. Here is an example of what I think was a wood aged beer cyber tasting we did in 2006:

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Sounds like fun Steve. My only concern with a swap like that is the cost of shipping may be prohibitive for some people.

I'm definitely interested though!

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
You only send everyone one bottle, in a case like this the biggest problem is if someone only has 750s available to ship. If the priority is that people make and ounce for ounce trade it will increase what everyone needs to send. And for a tasting line up a 750 is a lot. Anyway, we've done this over a dozen times, only produces happy campers!

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
So is everyone still into this? I can start making it happen if so, I'd need people to send their shipping info to me. shibolet, what is your country of residence? I'm going to be in Belgium next month if that helps.

I don't hit this board like I used to (plus I lost a couple weeks because of hurricane Sandy), most of you I don't think I recognize. Have any of you ever participated in an online tasting? Is that what you'd like to do, or do you just want to send each other beer to drink independently?

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
I think the online tasting sounds like a hoot! I've got a tropical, hoppy brett saison I'm bottling next week and could do some 33cl.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
i'm in Israel

i wouldn't mind shipping a few bottle to a single address but multiple addresses will get to be quite expensive.

is there anyone else outside the US ?

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Israel, that would be tough. I know there was one UK resident who has posted here, that's all I can say for non-US participants. I hate to say it shibolet, but I'm not sure I see a way that could work.

Are homebrew supplies easy to come by in Israel?

I'll be in for it as well. I have some ECY sour cherry strong ale to share. Online tasting session sounds like a great idea.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
SteveG, i'll step back than. i do realize overseas can be difficult.

to answer your question, homebrew supplies are available here but the variety is limited. we get English and German grain and some European and American hops, but only dry yeast and a small selection of equipment.

anyone want to send some yeast samples over here ? :)

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Do you know if its tough to ship from Europe? I'll be in Belgium in a couple weeks. I'd also wonder exactly what you could ship, for example are there issues shipping liquids in and out of the middle east? Even shipping inter-state here in the US they are cautious about that.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
I've actually never tried shipping beer at all. but what do i have to lose? a bottle or two?

BTW, a bunch of guys here have their own "beer of the month" thing going. they get together and order a case full of beer from www.halftimebeverage.com

that ships just fine.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
I guess if you can get a case for the US you are free and clear. Maybe it would be worth seeing if a home brew supply shop would ship to you. I understand they have those in the UK as well, and I think I saw a promo once for one in Belgium. Side stepping the ocean would probably cut down on shipping.

I would trade some of my sours. I have a Flanders, a Kriek, a couple varieties of Saison Bretta, and a 100% Brett Brown Porter.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Alrighty, we have one email in the thread and 2 have sent me info. So Matt, Gabe and Nick are in. Once we start sending out packages to each other we'll need to look at closing out the event as late comers can really hold up scheduling the actual tasting. If you'd like in for the online tasting swap I need to hear from you in the next week.

If you just want to swap with someone of course that's a different thing, have at it. I'm just putting the pieces together for an online tasting event.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Any interest in seeing if James from Basic Brewing Radio wants to be included? I'm a big homebrewing podcast lisetner and think it would be fun if everyone else who is sending beer out is game and James is interested.

Re: Homebrewed Sours/Funkies Trade?
Sure, I'd send out an extra beer.

Something I did not mention about these themed swaps, on many occasions we've included notable industry people. We did an all-brett swap once and invited Peter Bouckaert, who participated along with several people from New Belgium. Actually for our first all brett swap Tommy Author was a guest. We all sent him samples and he commented along with everyone else. Carried a bit more weight though! I think I recall Randy Thiel participating once too, he used to be the head brewer at Ommegang. Great experiences.
