using sour eqpt for non sour beer
is it possible to clean/sanitize glass carboys that once held sour beer well enough so that they can be used for non sour beers? id like to move a few sour beers that are currently in glass into plastic and use the glass carboys for other beers.

Re: using sour eqpt for non sour beer
I do this on a regular basis. I fill the carboy with hot (140ish) pbw and let it sit over night. Rinse with tap water and sanitize with Star San. I have never had a problem after probably 50 batches. I do keep separate non-glass equipment for the sours, but on occasion have forgotten, had a few too many, etc...and have used the wrong hose, airlock, etc... Again with no problem. I clean everythign with pbw and star san.

Don't take this as absolute truth as a few extra pieces of equipment will guarantee no cross-infection and no risk is better than little risk.

Same with me. PBW treatment overnight to remove all the crud.

Then my standard iodophor soak. Then re-use.

I try and not make anything too prized (like barleywine or RIS) that will be long aged in the same carboy immediately after the sour in case the cleaning isn't perfect though.

Haven't had any problems in about 4 years (6 sour beers).

cheers petec

Same here.

Plastic - seperate equip.

Glass or stainles - shared.

Re: using sour eqpt for non sour beer
its good to know i can clean em and reuse them. id always been hesitant to use buckets for some reason but with the price of carboys ive got no choice. so i think ill do all sour stuff in buckets from here out.

ive got a separate bottling bucket and racking cane, etc.

thanks!
