Alt/Steam

Posted by Mark A on 10/03/2006 12:14:44 PM

I was under the impression that alt and steam are both similar in process - lager yeast added, but fermented at ale temperature. If I had to differentiate, I'd say that steam beers (I've had) are a little hoppier, but I don't think that necessarily makes for a new style. This is probably a good example of convergent evolution. Steam beer is a product of the American west and Alt is specifically German, so the ingredients are going to have a bigger impact than the process. And the implications of calling your beer one or the other say something about how you want to be perceived. Still, I've noticed other awards over the years that are sold as one style and awarded as another. (And let's not forget Josh Oakes' interesting article questioning whether Steam is even a style).

And is kellerbier even a style? Certainly the word originated in Germany, and all German kellerbiers share similar characteristics, but the general method for storing and then serving a beer could be used with many types of beer.

I guess the overall problem is that you have all these different beers, and you want to give out more than just 3 medals for the entire event, so you have to group them somehow. They could just group by color of the beer or country where the style originated, or ABV, and we'd still have discussions.
