Re: Any brewer opinions of the GABF categories, as current?

Your memory seems pretty sketchy for such a young guy!

>>I just think it's funny seeing a beer winning a medal for an ESB...when the label (AND BREWER!) calls it an IPA.<<

Would not the brewer have been responsible for selecting the category the beer in entered into? Perhaps he/she calls it an IPA but knows it fits stylistically more comfortably into the ESB category. What a beer is to your customers and what it is to a judging panel can easily be two different things.

>>whould you rather see more strict guidelines, maybe following BJCP standards?<<

I'd be curious why anyone would want that. I've entered dozens of competitions. In each case they were open to all acknowledged categories but the final category list was far from mirroring the BJCP. Mostly categories are dropped, but I have seen cases where ones were invented if submissions warrented that. If you follow strict adhereance to what the BJCP says is beer then you either alienate brewers who think outside that box or you condem them to categories where they loosely fit and thus have no chance of winning. The BJCP offers guidelines, not handcuffs.

But that being said I have to admit some GABF categories sound wacky to me. But then I'm not the guy who has to deal with 1600 submissions. Nor is the BJCP. I think this is a case where you have to appreciate that theory and application are not the same things.
